About this place
Settling in at a sushi counter brings that pleasing first choice: order a balanced nigiri set right away, or ease into the meal with seasonal fish and a drink. Tucked into the residential streets of Hamadayama in Suginami Ward, Kanroku offers authentic sushi and small plates in an understated, relaxed setting.
The nigiri sets are neatly scaled to suit different appetites and moods. The Tokujo (Ume) set pairs nine pieces of nigiri with one roll; Jo (Take) comes with eight nigiri and one roll; and Nami (Matsu) includes seven nigiri alongside a half roll. Beyond nigiri, the kitchen prepares colourful special bara-chirashi and classic chirashi-zushi bowls, as well as tuna-centric rice bowls such as the rich toro-don and lean akami-don.
Thin sushi rolls (hoso-maki) are another highlight. Along with familiar choices like fatty tuna tekkamaki and lean red tuna rolls, the menu features crunchy ana-kyu (eel and cucumber) and himo-kyu (ark shell fringe and cucumber), refreshing ume-shiso and pickled-vegetable oshinko-maki, and comforting staples like sweet simmered kanpyo and natto rolls. They work equally well to cap off a dinner or to accompany a drink.
Diners can also settle into their meal with warm chawanmushi egg custard, comforting miso soup, or seasonal sashimi paired with beer or wine. Kanroku is open for both lunch and dinner, making it just as dependable for a quiet solo lunch as it is for an evening meal reserved in advance.
